I very much enjoyed July’s synod. It was so exciting to share synod with four friends, our CEYC synod observers. However this Synod had a very different feel from others – the new synod group of 500 odd members is still forming and building new relationships with a newly elected membershipand added to that was the apprehension of the shared conversations on human sexuality. This really changed the atmosphere of the meeting. The shared conversations were not organised to make a decision, they were there as a learning process – the motto was “good disagreement”.
The next couple of paragraphs explain my highlights of the weekend:
- Once again we had a lovely dinner with Archbishop Justin where we discussed the EU referendum, university, selfies and snapchat filters, whether he knows about the website http://fixyourcollar.tumblr.com/ (he does, he thinks it’s hilarious) and much other random but completely and utterly normal conversation.
- I was lucky enough to be called to speak in a debate on a new publication surrounding the Renewal & Reform vision – read it here . The link to the debate is at the bottom of this post if you’d like to listen.
- Other topics the synod discussed included a report on nurturing and discerning senior leaders, a presentation from the education division, the yearly church accounts made interesting by Canon John Spence winning a bet to get the words “lardy” and “unicorn” into his presentation. [In other news he’s a truly inspirational man – have a read here – oh and to add to all of that, he’s partially blind].
As Synod representatives our term has come to an end now which is rather sad – due to business there will be no meeting of the full synod in November, just a meeting of the house of Bishops, so sadly we have one less synod. But this means that elections for the synod representatives are coming round in November, if you’re a CEYC diocese rep, maybe think about standing for a place – and if you’re not a CEYC rep for your diocese then enquire about becoming one! We’d love to have you with us!
We will post more information about the CEYC team positions up for election in a couple of months, but for now have a look at our residential and get excited – we are!!!

Alex studies colouring in *ahem* geography at the University of Birmingham. She loves food and cake and pie and pizza and chocolate and Jesus and her family and friends (not necessarily in that order). She has been one of our synod reps since January 2015 and you can follow her on twitter: @peainapodd.
