Church of England Youth Council

Guidelines and Responsibilities of CEYC Reps

CEYC is open to two representatives from every diocese in the Church of England, who are aged between 16 and 24. To be a member of CEYC, you should be someone who is open to discovering more about your faith through interaction with others.

Your commitment as a representative lasts for 2 years. However we do recognise that situations may change and therefore remain flexible. (Initially we asked one member to commit for 3 years to ensure that we have a balance of old and new council members.)

We envisage the commitment to be one residential and one day meeting per year with regular communication in between, mostly through the website and Action Groups, which are discussed later in this guide.

The meetings will provide thought-provoking, creative and enjoyable ways of exploring topical issues, reporting to relevant national bodies and taking action where appropriate. This will be done through the Action Groups and by you, the diocesan representative, engaging with your diocese.

When the motions and topics for meetings are communicated to you, you should research the issues before coming to the meetings, share the issues within your diocese and bring to the council the stance of others within your diocese, as well as your own personal beliefs. We recognise that sufficient time is required to research this, and will endeavour to provide information about topics sufficiently far in advance as to make this possible.

Your responsibility is, with support, to provide an active link between the council and your diocese. This includes the young people of your diocese, through diocesan youth councils and DYOs, and the leaders of the diocese, including the bishop and diocesan synod.

Each individual CEYC member should check the website regularly for information about upcoming events. We also hope that you will use the website as a point of contact with other members of the council and encourage every representative to register on the site. Any updates to this handbook will be available on the website and a paper copy can be sent to you on request.
