HiHi everyone, I'm an undergraduate at UCL who is hopefully going to get more involved in what the CEYC gets up to - it sounds a good idea from what I read. I just thought I'd introduce myself ! With best wishes, Edward (mbyo15)

Hi Edward,
Welcome to the site! I know at least one CEYC rep at UCL, and she'll probably introduce herself on here in due course.

Hi Adam. Oh really ? Wow !
Hi Adam.
Oh really ? Wow ! I had no idea ! I look forward to finding out who she is !
Edward
PS: Sorry this appeared twice - I double clicked something by accident and it just happened !

So Edward what are you studying at UCL?

I do History so spend most
I do History so spend most my time thinking about the Reformation, Medieval Drama and the English Civil War !
(I can almost hear the groans !)
Edward
PS: My PS comment before about repitition seems rather wierd. At one stage on this board - that whole post by me appeared twice which is why it was there originally. Now it isn't so there is no use for the supplementary. As a historian I blame by computer illiteracy !
Sounds alright actually
Sounds alright actually mate. I like history. History is destined to repeat itself if nobody listens.
I probably need correcting but i think last CEYC meeting we stayed at one of Oliver Cromwell's places near Watford.
I prefer the use of homing pigeons to modern technology. Far more trustworthy and a meal if you get stranded.

That was me deleting the duplicate post. Sorry, I probably should have zapped the other one or said something earlier.

hello im at UCL im laura I
hello im at UCL im laura I study psychology, where do u live, ohhhh wicked.
Sorry control myslef slight over reaction.
I think you have converted
I think you have converted me to homing pigeons now ! I'm not that familiar with Cromwell as I'm not a big fan of his - I would imagine a lot of his lands were in Cambridgeshire and around the Fens etc but I could be completely wrong so don't quote me on that.
Charles I however, was amazing ! (I think I'm getting ahead of myself here !)
Woodrow High House, i think
Woodrow High House, i think it's where Cromwell's family lived during the Civil War.
He's like a lot of people in history though. Did some good things, did some evil things. But i'd deffo be on his side in the Civil War. Theologically, morally, socially, politically; there's stuff i'd have to stand against but on all those fronts i'd pick him over Charles any day.
Next CEYC we could have a Civil War reconstruction! Me with my homing pigeons! C'mon! We'll tec yez all on! lol
Vive la revolucion!

Well, you have to remember
Well, you have to remember that Charles I and my total historical hero, Lord Archbishop Laud (the Martyr !!!) was trying to give back prestige to the church taken away during it's more Calvinistic period. Ultimately, with the Restoration in the 1660s, his 'grouping' more or less one. I think Cromwell is interesting - it is very difficult to work out what he really thought about anything really.
The interesting question, and this is me getting at my most sad and historical here (I don't normally do this but you have me on my main subject !) is considering to what extent Laud and Charles I were the theological revolutionaries as opposed to Cromwell and the other Calvinists - were they in fact the orthodox majority having a challenge mounted against them by another movement, theologically different to it ! Theologically myself, I am certainly with Laud !
We could indeed have a reconstruction ! I don't know if I'll be at it yet though - I have an appointment with my diocesan DYO next Friday to tell me about everything so I'll do whatever he needs doing really.
Regards,
Edward
Well i'm a communist so
Well i'm a communist so they're all scum! Haha, just messin. I can't claim to be doing a degree on the subject (and i'd like to have that depth of knowledge on the ins and outs of it) but i do have a fair grasp of the situation.
From my relatively limited point of view it seems like there were several sides that displayed characteristicts of devout saint and despotic sinner. Although i admire parts of the royalists' campaign i'd feel dirty supporting them lol! Probably in the same way i think some of Hitler's ideas were brilliant (MASSIVE NOTE TO ANYONE WHO THINKS I LIKE HITLER!: DON'T BE DAFT! LOADS OF HIS IDEAS WERE'NT!) By same token Cromwell did some terrible things but i lean heavily on the protestant side anyway.
There is a problem with history in that it's usually written by the winners, so i'd try not to side with any of them too much anyway. It's a crazy world.
Tired, want food....
Funny mental image of a supermodel army.... lol
Cya later
Andy
You are probably right on
You are probably right on the numerous characteristics being displayed on all sides point. However :), I don't think for one moment Cromwell was an egalitarian at all, and when there was a quasi communist movement that he at first tolerated, the Diggers, he got rid of them. I personally go for the side which tried to give money back to the Church that the more Puritan members of the hierarchy and Henry VIII stole from it !
To be fair to Cromwell though, his point 'We always wonder if God is on our side, but sometimes I wonder what side God thinks we're on !' is rather a good one.
Good job i never for one
Good job i never for one second suggested Cromwell was in any way egalitarian then aint it. lol! Probably a bit of crossed wires there. I meant all sides were bad and clash with my ideals in some way. From what i know of the levellers and diggers and any other of the many radical Christian groups at the time Cromwell abused them. Held on as long as he felt it expedient!
On the other stuff i guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. We will have to get a mock war going - like on that South Park episode! Fun!
It's a good quote that like. I wrote it in the front of my Bible a couple of years ago. Came across it at the same time i was looking at a picture of a German buckle reading 'Gott mit uns'.
Is the rest of the country hit by this virus going about or just Teesside?
Andy
I think we have virus' 100 %
I think we have virus' 100 % of the time in London so I couldn't really comment on that. Fair point about Cromwell - I didn't catch that part of your implication - all clear now.
It's odd because I think it's one of my favourite quotes, the other being from + Laud ! It just goes to show how both can be complimentary to one's own faith !
I saw a huge monster of an antique german sword once which had the inscription 'Never draw me without reason, never sheath me without honour !' I think that's rather good as well - although clearly not spiritual.
